The Poker Scene in Malaysia
There
are not many places in Malaysia which you can go to enjoy a game of
poker, eventhough it is quickly gaining popularity in the country. The
one and only casino in the country, the Casino de Genting in Genting
Highlands, cannot accommodate the growing number of poker players in
Malaysia despite offering one of the largest selections of poker games. Thus, many players resort to seedy
and illegal gambling dens which can be found elsewhere.
Aside from this, the casino regularly holds poker tournaments. This is
mainly in the form of smaller weekly tournaments, except
for several times a year when the casino holds a major Texas
Hold’em Poker or Three Card Draw matches for high stakes players from
all over the world. The grand prize for the biggest yearly poker
tournament held at the casino is up to RM50,000, which is about 15,000
US dollars. Only in the casino can you play legitimate poker
tournaments. Other illegal tournaments have also
been known to surface once in a while but it is usually advertised just
days before the day of the event to avoid any clampdowns.
Playing Poker Online in Malaysia
Not
only is it illegal to play poker outside of the casino but it is also
illegal to play it online. Malaysia currently does not have any online poker sites
due to its strict gambling regulations and the Malaysian government
have blocked many Internet gambling sites to prevent the use of
foreign poker websites by local players. Despite the effort to curb it,
it is still difficult
to enforce since these internet poker sites are hosted overseas where
the Malaysian government has no authority.
Banks in the country have also been urged to wedge any suspected
transactions to these online poker rooms, but it is obviously
difficult to monitor every single transaction. The authorities have also
been said to nab the operators of small Internet cafes who allow their
patrons to gamble on the Internet although no one person have ever been
charged or convicted for gambling online in Malaysia. |
